Chronofighter R.A.C. (Column Wheel)
Sporting a brand-new engine
British drivers might be tempted to believe that the Chronofighter's new acronym stands for the Royal Automobile Club, or maybe even for a Royal Airforce Commando… In actual fact, it is an abbreviated reference to the sophisticated high-precision movement that shifts this dynamic line of chronographs into top gear, or sends it soaring to ever greater heights – depending on whether you feel it is the driving or the aviation metaphor that best translates its vocation and performances!
While equipped with a novel version of Graham's famous left-hand controls, the Chronofighter R.A.C. models also house a fascinating “hidden asset” that is partially revealed exclusively in the limited edition Skeleton model. They are indeed powered by a column-wheel chronograph movement ensuring greatly enhanced precision, known as “roue à colonne” in French – hence the cryptic three letters R.A.C. Widely considered to be the finest chronograph movement in mechanical horology, a column-wheel chronograph mechanism consists of a ratchet wheel with 6 triangular contrate teeth or columns, governing the precision operation of various levers controlling the chronograph functions. Its superior degree of sophistication is confirmed by the fact that very few watch brands are currently capable of producing such a mechanism.
Getting a grip…
Thus entirely in tune with Graham's historic quest for accuracy and reliability, combined with a taste for highly contemporary aesthetic and technical features, the Chronofighter R.A.C. comes in a number of different versions that each reveal new facets of its fascinating personality. The evocatively named steel models (Black Shock, Black Speed, Silver Fighter and Black Fighter) are endowed with new and original dials reinforcing their resolutely sporting connotations and top-flight capabilities. Certain variations “go for gold”, thereby emphasising the innately noble nature of the R.A.C. “engine”, while the skeleton model with its “côtes de Genève” dial provides tantalizing partial glimpses of the sophisticated movement that may be observed in more detail through the sapphire crystal case-back fitted on the entire new range.
Last but not least, as mentioned earlier, the distinctive left-hand drive chronograph controls have been endowed with a powerful new lever, complete with a “palette” ensuring a better grip reminiscent of the steering wheel design on high-speed racing cars. From whichever angle you look at it, the Chronofighter R.A.C. is a superlative time machine.
