Arnold & Son reinterprets one of its most personal pieces. DSTB 42 Platinum, for “Dial Side True Beat”, sports its true seconds mechanism on the dial side, with its characteristic anchor. Beneath its two openworked and finely bevelled gold bridges, the system affirms the historic attachment that binds Arnold & Son to marine chronometers.
The true seconds, also known as the deadbeat seconds, is a reference to the marine chronometers of John Arnold (great English watchmaker of the 18th century) whose escapement beats the seconds which was naturally displayed by a seconds’ hand. The deadbeat seconds made it possible to calculate a time and therefore precisely define the longitude of a ship at sea. In 2023, Arnold & Son redesigned the case, the movement and the true seconds components of its DSTB.
Here, the platinum case goes from 44 to 42 mm, a consequence of the reduction in diameter of the automatic calibre A&S6203, while its running time increases to 55 hours. There remains the elegance of the to-and-fro movement of the true seconds and the refinement of a salmon-colour dial whose sunburst radiates from the centre of the deadbeat seconds.
