After introducing the first tourbillon featuring a highly innovative high-tech* ceramic bottom-plate, CHANEL confirmed its status as a pioneer of contemporary watchmaking by creating the J12 Rétrograde Mystérieuse.
The Rétrograde Mystérieuse is the embodiment of innovation and includes 5 complications, 4 of which relate to the movement and 1 to the exterior of the watch:
1. A tourbillon
2. A digital minutes display
3. A retrograde minutes hand
4. A 10-day power reserve
5. A retractable vertical crown
This perfectly round watch with a 47 mm diameter has been designed without a lateral crown to ensure optimum comfort on the wrist.
The work on this complication was entrusted to one of the most meticulous watchmaking design/construction workshops: the Giulio Papi (APRP SA) team.
When the minute hand butts up against the crown built into the dial, it starts moving backwards around the dial until it is positioned on the other side of the dial: an entirely new retrogradation (return journey) design in the world of fine mechanical complications.
So that the watch continues to give the time whilst the minute hands is reversing, a digital minute counter is displayed in a magnifying aperture at 6 o'clock: between minutes 11 and 19, the time is therefore read with the classic hour hand and the figures which appear in this aperture. The watch remains totally accurate, further improved by its tourbillon.
The winding crown is retractable: when disconnected from its various functions (winding and setting the time), it is pushed in and remains blocked in the down position.
Simple pressure brings it out of its housing, with no ill effect on the running of the watch, to restore its functions.
