Description

The “Lotus” is a tribute to traditional Peranakan art, a mixed heritage of the former Straits Settlements. While people of Peranakan heritage are still largely present in Singapore, the crafts and art of the culture is gradually fading.

The artwork on the watch dial is a deconstruction of vibrant traditional Peranakan tiles, which still adorn the facades and interiors of many of the conserved shophouses here in Singapore. The Champlevé enamelling technique is used here, with gradient work carefully applied in every trough.

The Lotus, as a symbol, is deeply entrenched in Peranakan culture, representing purity and resilience, having conquered adversity despite growing in muddy waters.

The straps feature traditional Peranakan beadwork, which is a form of craft used in slippers favoured by the Nyonyas (Peranakan ladies) in the past. Very little knowledge of this intricate craft is left.

The dials, beadwork, straps and watch assembly are all done locally in Singapore, and represent the nation’s first attempt at a Métiers d’Art watch.

Feynman Timekeepers is a small independent watch-brand based in Singapore, with just 4 years in existence. We create compelling timepieces, each challenging conventional aesthetics.
