It is an extraordinary honour for Gerald Charles to carry the name of the great Gérald Charles Genta forward into the future and to celebrate his unique talent. Monsieur Genta founded the company in 2000 and designed the Maestro in 2006, often saying it was his favourite Gerald Charles creation. It has been the company’s great privilege to explore the Maestro’s singular form and to find new expressions of its sporty, elegant, unmistakable silhouette.
The Maison’s mission these last few years has been to bring the Maestro design and the story of its creator to a new generation of watch lovers. But it’s also been to evolve Monsieur Genta’s original concept to deliver even greater levels of performance and desirability. How far could the design be pushed?
At first, the Maestro Ref. GC3.0-A-02 does not look like a diver’s watch. Visually, it’s defined by its esoteric architecture, its smile at 6 o’clock, and the elegant ripple effect created by its tiered case, which suggests a classical, dressy watch. It’s also powered by an exclusive, beautifully hand-finished, ultra-thin automatic chronograph calibre, produced together with Gerald Charles’ movement partner Vaucher. But the natural, vulcanized, rubber strap signals that this is more than an exercise in fine watchmaking: this is a watch designed for adventure, both the everyday and the extreme.
To test it, Italian Olympic swimming champion, Luca Dotto, wore the watch when he descended to the bottom of Y-40® The Deep Joy, the 42.15 metre deep pool in Italy’s Padua that in 2014 became the world’s deepest indoor pool. It proved more than capable of performing under those pressures, returning to the surface in perfect working order.
In the spirit of Monsieur Genta, it was the Maison’s aim to make the most versatile, ergonomic watch on the market, one that can genuinely be both a stylish dress watch and a high-performance luxury sports watch. The Maestro Ref. GC3.0-A-02 surpassed expectations – and might just have redefined the diver’s watch category.
