Sogdian Whirling Dance
Dunhuang was an oasis strategically located at the crossroad on the ancient Silk Road, as well as a meeting place of various culture and religions such as Buddhism and is best known for the nearby Mogao Caves.
In Mogao Caves, an innovation of the Sui-Tang dynasty period is the visual representation of the sutra – Mahayana Buddhist teachings transformed into large complete and detailed narrative mural paintings. Buddha Amitabha, lectures in the center of the Sutra painting, great bodhisattvas, the semi-gods and the semi-devils were on his sides, there were also performers singing and dancing around. In this Pure Land of the Buddhism, details of secular life and Tang’s culture were vividly depicted.
FIYTA-X collaborates with Chinese enamel masters, using the traditional Chinese Cloisonné technique, bringing the dancer from the Tang dynasty’s mural painting in Mogao Caves into the present on the dial. Wearing a green jewel headpiece and a long satin ribbon entwined on her shoulder and arms, the dancer was doing the Sogdian whirling dance, the most famous dance in Tang Dynasty, on a colorful felt carpet. She gently stretched her arms, her crimson clothes swayed as she moved, it was full of strength in her lithe body while she whirled.
